One of the things that I tried recently was to use the mod_deflate feature of Apache. This module allows for webpages to be compressed before being sent to the client. While my site is still pretty small, the main page of this blog is large enough to be a slow download over a modem. From some of the testing sites I visited, it looks like the size of the raw HTML page is reduced to 1/4 the size of the original (from about 45k to 11k). I’m sure there are a bunch more settings that I could tweak, but I’m going to leave like it is and see how things work over the next couple of days.

Eating Bread!
Yesterday I posted about baking bread, well I happy to report that the bread is AWESOME! It has to be the best bread that I have ever eaten. It had a hard crispy crust, and and chewy crumb (the insides). It was busting with flavor, slightly sour but not overpowering, with a hint of whole wheat. WOW. It is great and fairly easy to make.
There are a couple of other recipes that I want to try in the book as well, including two scone recipes.

Baking Bread
I’m baking my first loaf of bread out of the The Bread Bible. It is the Basic Hearth Bread. It has been a lot of fun making it. She has really detailed instructions, which help. I started the whole process over 24 hrs ago. It goes through many stages, starting with a fermenting stage, followed by a couple of risings, and finally baking using an extra pan and ice cubes to increase the moisture. The bread will be coming out of the oven in about 10 minutes. It all ready smells good. Look for an update tomorrow as to how it turns out.
